  • According to the sagas it was actually the first norse settler in Greenland, Eric the Red, who called this country Greenland. After he had lived for three years in this region he returned to Iceland, and wanted to convince his fellow countrymen of the fine opportunities for starting a new life here in this 'Green Land'.
  • The age of the icebergs varies from approx. 500 to 100,000 years.
    A high air content makes the icebergs appear opaque and white, while
    a low air content gives the ice a bright blue colour.
  • The most active glacier in the world - at Ilulissat - moves around 22 metres a
    day and calves across a front 10 kilometres in width
  • Greenland's national day is June 21 and is called "Ullortuneq" which means "The longest Day". The day is celebrated throughout Greenland with cultural activities and public outdoor feasts.
  • The world Ice Golf Championship takes place every spring in Uummannaq - among the icebergs at the sea ice.
  • With its 2.175.600 km2 Greenland is the largest island in the World. Australia is larger but is considered to be a continent.
